Are you counting down the days until you can enjoy your outdoor space in Denver?  During the winter months you have plenty of time to design and plan your new landscape, whether you're adding fresh plantings or planning an entire landscape renovation  Our expert landscaping services offer landscape renovation to take out the old, tired material, and freshen it up with a beautiful new design; be it new edging, rock / wood mulch, boulders / cobble, or plantings.  Whether you are making a few changes or interested in a full redesign of your landscaping, we have a few tips to help you through the planning stages.
  • What functions do you want your landscape to have? Do you want the perfect outdoor entertaining space, a relaxing retreat to escape to at the end of your day, a play area for your children or pets, or even a fruit or vegetable garden area?  Knowing how the different areas of your Denver landscape will function will help you through the planning process.  If you’re creating multiple spaces, there are endless creative ways to define spaces in your yard; whether you want to utilize hardscapes, low plants to create borders, or even walkways.
  • Be Aware of Your Home Owner’s Association Rules: The last thing anyone wants to deal with is breaking ground on their beautiful new Denver landscape design only to receive notification from their HOA that what is done is not allowed and you may even be fined.  This stress is avoidable!  By contacting your HOA before you start your landscape design and finding out what is allowed will save you the stress and added cost of having to remove your project.
  • Understand Your Property:  Understanding the microclimates of your space, soil type, as well as topography of your land for drainage will help you create a healthy and vibrant Denver landscape to be enjoyed for years. Microclimates are small areas of your yard that have a different temperature than the surrounding area, usually due to the amount of available sunlight and wind.  Whether you’re creating a new space or renovating your current landscape, carefully pick your plantings according to their appropriate zone.  The topography also plays a role in the success of your plantings; low-laying areas of your property will collect water, while high points tend to be drier.  Some plants thrive in direct sunlight in high, dry areas and add an aesthetic value, while others will wither and detract from your design.  Learning what plants excel in each zone will help you avoid the hassle of removing failed plants and having to replace them.
  • Use Plants to Your Advantage: Plantings not only add scenery to your landscape, they also can provide a pleasant aroma and create barriers to define a space.  When planning your Denver landscape design, don’t just think about the visuals.  Aroma / scents when flowers bloom are exceptionally fragrant and add an element of splendor.  Flowers bloom at different times, so be sure to plan your design accordingly and that the flowers blooming around the same time have complimenting fragrances.  Tall hedges not only define a space, but create an element of privacy whereas low hedges are ideal for creating barriers and defining spaces.  Ground cover plants may also be used as an implied barrier as well as a way to define a separate space.  As mentioned above, available sun, wind, water, and even animals all affect landscaping and using plants that excel in certain areas are to your benefit.
  • Plan for the Future: A plant’s growth rate must be taken into consideration when designing your Denver landscape.  When you’re creating your design, be sure to space out the mature size of each plant and take into consideration their growth rate, allowing ample room for each plant to excel.  It can be problematic to plan for the mature size of plants, as their full size greatly depends on environmental and growing conditions.  If the plants are spaced too closely it can become a maintenance issue.  It’s best to leave enough space between the mature plants so that they do not touch each other.  Make sure the mature plants are amply spaced away from the exterior of your home or garage, as well as AC and other units.  This causes not only enough air circulation for the plants, but allows for easy access should your home need maintenance.
  • Protect Natural Resources:  We’re no strangers to drought and we’ve seen many people transition their Denver landscapes to xeriscapes.  Xeriscapes not only save water, but they are low maintenance, using plants that are native to Colorado will remove the need for fertilizing and pesticides, as well as provides beauty all year round.
Whether you are freshening up your landscape design or creating a new outside oasis, it’s best to leave sufficient time to plan your Denver landscape; it takes time to research plantings and to design your new functional space.  If you are planning a landscape renovation, make a note of any materials that may be reused and reincorporated into your new design.  Our professional landscapers and arborists are here to help you throughout the process.  Once you have an idea of your landscaping design, contact your Denver landscaping professionals at American Arbor Care, and we’ll be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have and break ground with you on your new landscape!
